How does a sound insulation test work?
While the whole process of sound insulation testing can sound complicated, it’s really quite simple. We undertake two major tests – one for airborne sound and one for impact.
Airborne sound:
To test for airborne sound, we place a loudspeaker on one side of the partition or wall and measure the sound from the other side. This is a good representation of how sound will travel once residents are living in the dwelling.
Impact sound:
Impact sound is measured by a tapping machine, which we place on the floor we’re testing. We then stand underneath the floor and record the sound. This gives us the results we can then analyse, making sure they comply with Part E of Regulations.
Why flanking might be a problem?
You may or may not have heard of flanking already, but this is when sound passes under, over or around the wall or floor. This means the sound can travel along the structures that you share with other buildings. Unfortunately, this can mean that sound is able to access spaces between the separating partitions, causing your pre-completion test to fail. If this happens, don’t worry. We are here to help and offer advice, whatever the outcome.
