Why should I book a sound insulation test?

A sound insulation test is required on any new, converted or residential dwelling to give residents a happy, quiet place to live. This happens before completion of your property, which is why a sound insulation test is also known as a pre-completion test. There are specific building regulations that set out what a reasonable sound level should be – these comply with “Approved Document E of the Building Regulations for England and Wales – Resistance to the Passage of Sound”.

But don’t worry….

HA Acoustics are able to provide you with a top quality service, using expert noise technicians to make the whole process super simple. If you know you need a sound insulation test or are thinking of booking one in – get in touch today to talk through it with us.

How does a sound insulation test work?

It’s really simple and it doesn’t take long to do. On the day of your test, we will test for either impact or airborne sound – or both. During the impact sound test, we put a tapping machine on the floor to be tested and record the noise underneath the floor. This will give us the results we need to analyse to make sure they comply with Part E of building regulations.

With an airborne sound test, we will put a loudspeaker on one side of the wall or partial and measure the sound from the other side. This will give us our airborne measurement.

We should make you aware of flanking, as this can in some circumstances cause your pre-completion test to fail. This is where sound passes under, over or around the wall or floor, travelling along the structures that you share with other buildings. However, if you get your test in early and liaise with us every step of the way, we can prevent this from happening or help you to get it fixed.
